Trip Overview

Makalu Expedition is the most splendid and beautiful mountain with the acute pyramid design having four ridges in Nepal. This is the fifth tallest mountain of the world with a height of 8485 meters from sea level. The experienced team of Everest Summiteers and Sherpa of the Adventure Victory Team presents an amazing mountaineering experience for the climbers.  This is the neighboring mountain of the gigantic Mt. Everest. This is situated between Mount Everest and Mount Kanchenjunga.

The sharp four ridges and the acute pyramid shape makes this mountain stands out in the Mahalangur Himalayan range. Climbers should not make a mistake because of their beauty. This is probably one of the dangerous peaks to climb as well. The statistics show that among the first sixteen attempts of the Makalu summit only five of the team got successful. Many of the climbers first observed the Mt. Makalu for the possibility of ascending but they could not dare to climb the peak. Only after the successful summit of the Mt. Everest people tried to succeed in this lofty mountain. In 1955 m the team of French group first succeeded in ascending the Mt. Makalu. The journey to reach its base camp is equally captivating as it is in the vicinity of the Arun Valley inside Makalu Barun National Park. Makalu Expedition journey starts from the flight to the Tumlingtar.

The ascending of the mountain will be from the northwest side’s ridge making the four high camps on the peak. The experienced team of Sherpa will fix ropes and allow you to climb comfortably according to mountain standards. The key to summit any mountain is the strong team character. Book the Makalu Expedition package with the Adventure Victory Team Trecking & Expedition. You will learn the team ethics and the essence of mountain life with us. The Everest Summiteers in our team would make safety during mountaineering to the maximum.

Trip Highlights

  • Visit the Patan Durbar Square, Buddhist viharas and temples

Itinerary

You will meet a representative from Adventure Victory Team when you arrive at Kathmandu International Airport. From the airport, you will be transferred to the Hotel in the heart of Kathmandu city. After having rest for some time at the Hotel, you can visit our office to gather information about the trip. Have dinner organized by Adventure Victory Team in the evening with your team members.

Today, we will explore the Kathmandu city, rich in culture and heritage. There are many places in Kathmandu to see, but in one day you can visit only a few. So, we will take you to Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhu, and Kathmandu Durbar square. In the meantime, we will arrange all the documents required for Makalu Expedition.

We take breakfast early in the morning and go to the airport for the flight to Tumlintar. The duration of the flight is about 45 minutes. After landing at Tumlingtar airport, we drive to the village of Khadbari, which will take around 2 hours. After breakfast, we head towards the airport for an early morning flight to the grassy airstrip of Tumlingtar. After landing at Tumlingtar, we take a drive of about two hours to reach the village of Khadbari. Newar and Rai ethnic tribe communities inhabited this village largely. It is the main administrative center of Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area. We register at the park office check post and continue our trek.

We start our trek after breakfast on the trail that passes through beautiful villages to Mane Bhanjyang. Further, the trail ascends to a small ridge and them to a minor pass at Bhotebas. Enjoy the view of Makalu from the top. We walk through the dense forest before reaching the village of Chichira, where we stay for the night in tented camp.

After breakfast in Chichira, our trek begins following the trail heading toward the village of Kumpani. After walking for a while, we cross another minor pass-Daju La Pass and then descend steeply through the dense forest to the village of Num. Upon arriving in Num, we set up our camp at good camping grounds to end today's trek.

Leaving the campsite at Num Village, we start our day following the trail leads us to the suspension bridge over Arun Nadi. After crossing the bridge, the trail goes uphill through the dense forest towards Seduwa. Trekking for about 5-6 hours, we reach Seduwa. It is a large trading village and has a check post of National Park. Registration at the check post is mandatory before further continuing the trek.

After having breakfast at the camp, we leave Seduwa and head towards Tashigaon. The trail passes through Murmidanda, and on the way, we can see local students going to school. From Murmidanda, we hike uphill towards Narbugaon. We continue our trek through dense forest and cultivated farmlands towards Tashigaon. It is the last village that you find on the trail, so it is better to buy the necessary items here.

We leave Tashigaon after breakfast and climb up steeply through the beautiful cloud forest. Trek continues uphill towards Unshisa where you will see campsite and tea shop which are open only during the peak season of trekking. Further, we continue to trek uphill until we reach the campsite in Kauma Danda for the overnight stay.

Today is one of the toughest days of our trek as we continue following the trail that crosses Kauma La Pass with magnificent views of Chamlang, Makalu, Baruntse, Jannu, and Kanchenjunga. From there, we continue to walk and cross Tutu-La Pass before descending to a large lake - Kalo Pokhari. In Nepali, Kalo Pokhari means 'Black Lake.' Our trail from there further ascends towards Keke La Pass, from where you can have magnificent views of Chamlang range and Tibet to the north. We descend on the steep and rocky trail from the top of the pass, which leads us to the campsite of Mumbuk.

Today, after breakfast, we continue to trek on the trail that descends to the riverbed of Barun (Nadi) River and then climb up the steep hillside. From here, our trail goes along the loose ground, and we should be aware while trekking along the loose landslide trails. After trekking for 4-5 hours, we arrive at Nehe Kharka.

We leave Nene Kharka after breakfast and continue our trek over the loose trails until we cross the Barun River. We further head to Yangri Kharka through grassy fields and then pass through the dense forest of pine, rhododendron, and fir towards Langmale Kharka. Next, we walk over an ancient lateral moraine. An easy trail from here leads us to Shersong, where we will stay for the night.

Leaving Shersong, we follow the trail that heads up for the climbing of more moraines. From the top, the trail descends gradually and crosses a small bridge before heading towards the stone huts of Makalu Base Camp. You can enjoy amazing views of mountains from the base camp. We will set up the tents and check our climbing gear for the climbing of Mt. Makalu, which starts from the next day.

Considering the weather condition, we head towards the summit of Mount Makalu. You have to be careful in every step you take while climbing and follow the instruction given by your trek leader. When you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with the fabulous view of some of the tallest pick in the world, including Everest, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, and several others. After spending some quality time at the summit, we descend back to base came.

We have achieved what we have come for, and now it is time to return. After doing all the preparation for the return journey, we start our trek retracing our steps on the trail the passes through the village of Shersong and Nehe Kharka. An easy path from Nehe Kharka leads us back to Mumbuk, where we set our camp for overnight. We cherish our success with folksongs and dances around the campsite in the evening.

After breakfast at Mumbuk, we pack our gears and head toward Tasigaon. The duration of our trek will be 6-7 hours. We follow the trail that passes through the crossing of minor passes and reaches Kauma Danda. After trekking for some time from Khuma Danda, we arrive at Tashigaon, which will be our final destination of the day.

From Tashigaon, our trail goes towards Narbugoan through hillside forests and cultivated fields. From there, we descend on a steep trail and then follow a easy path to the village of Seduwa. After resting for some time at Seduwa, we continue our trek and cross Arun river and climb gently before reaching Num where we stay for the night.

Leaving Num after breakfast, we trek through a steep section of the forest and reach a minor pass Daju La at 2,100 meters. From here, we head toward the village of Kuwapani. Our trek continues further towards the village of Kuwapani with the magnificent view of Makalu. We further pass through the villages of Chichira and Mane Bhanjyang before reaching Kadbari, where we stay overnight.

As our trek already ends, we enjoy our tea, coffee, and breakfast in our lodge and drive back to Tumlingtar for the flight to Kathmandu. You can choose to trek to Tumlingtar, which takes around 4 to 5 hours. But we suggest you drive as you have returned from a long expedition of Mt. Makalu. While driving back, you can see the activities of the local people.

After having breakfast early in the morning, we take a scenic flight to Kathmandu from Tumlingtar Airport. Enjoy the magnificent view of the Mountains and landscapes during the flight of 45 minutes. We will transfer you to the Hotel from Kathmandu Airport. You can take rest at the hotel or visit attraction destinations, which were not possible on the second day of your trip.

We will drive you to the Kathmandu International Airport for the flight to your next destination. We hope that you have a wonderful time in Nepal with Adventure Victory Team. See you again!
